Party time...
We had our girls' graduation party this weekend, with lots of outside set up to be done, some cooking, and some running around. Of course, a fun time was had by most (never say all~!). Great to see folks, and be able to sit and talk.
Well, I planned on keeping Mom busy in the morning, and prior to the party. She gets confused if she doesn't have some specific things to do, and hates to be told to go sit down. We gave her stuff to bring outside - you know, all those things you have to schlep outside. Took about 6 trips back and forth, then we were pretty much set.
Where was Dad, you might wonder...well, so did we! Dad was hiding up in their room...no work to be done for him! We were actually alright with that - imagine you are setting up chairs, tables, bringing food out, and there is this old man sitting in a chair right in the walkway, telling people the best way to do everything. He's really not old enough to be doing it that way, nor is he that infirm.
Some fun little happenings from the party...last week, my 6 year old nephew was over, and wanted something to eat ("Can I have some food, Auntie Judi?"). I bring out a small tray of cut up fruit that he proceeds to rummage through. I said, "You take the next piece or I'm going to cut your fingers off." He laughed, in a scared way, looked at his mother. She said, "Listen to her" and he did take the next piece he touched. So, my nephew was standing by the food table, and Dad was rummaging through the 2 big tins of fried chicken, touching pieces, looking for a breast. I said, "You better take the next one you touch!" The kid was giggling and laughing, and wondered, "Are you gonna cut his fingers off, Auntie Judi?"
Seeing family all together was cool - both sides were there - nice to see the girl cousins all chillin'.
Having the sisters was great - of course we missed Nancy, as always. She was certainly there in spirit - animal prints abounded!
We were lucky enough to have some very good friends pop over later on in the day from the Cabo Verde clan. Mary is 93, her daughter is just a bit older than us. Mary is one of the last people alive who has known my mom since she was 14 (I think her just a bit younger sister, my aunt, is the only other one besides my Dad). My great friend and cousin made the drive from Long Island, and some of our pseudo-family were there too. My neighbor on one side is the 'rents' age, so she popped over, ate, then took a nap and came back later! Our neighbor on the other side fit right in as well.
It's really nice to have all of these connections, and be able to get folks together to celebrate.
Ended the day with a lovely evening on the New Haven Green with good friends, good people watching, and some great music!
