Significant change...
So much to talk about, as we leave this year behind...my parents will be with us for the foreseeable future, which is a big change. We always depended upon the freedom of the New Year, as they left for sunshine and warmth. Because of the significant changes with Mom, and Dad's real inability to deal with them, they won't be going south. Dad thinks they may be able to "just go for a week or two" sometime in the spring. I think, though, he doesn't really anticipate he can handle Mom. So we'll see how that goes.
Christmas was a good day for most of the day. Mom was pretty lost by the end of the day. She really tried to keep it going, but with all the little ones, and big ones, she was done by about 7. One of her gifts - probably her favorite gift - was a Groucho Marx set of glasses, with the 'stache and all. There was even a wind up thingy that made the 'stache and eyebrows move! Miah sure knows how to get her going - he also got her wind up teeth that chattered all over the table.
When we were kids, and when our kids were kids, Mom always had a stash of toys that were funny and scary. She had lots of crazy glasses, funky Asian masks that the kids were terrified of, spiders that jumped when you pumped the air into them. She collected cicada shells - you know the outside of the cicada that they leave behind when molting into their being with wings? She kept them in a little box, and popped into her room and come out with them all on her shirt. My kids were never afraid of them - just thought they were cool.
Unbeknownst to us, however, Mom was churning up another hallucination builder. By the end of the week, she was seeing little kids outside, and bugs on the wall again. Back to the doc, with a new plan this time - extra pills so we can start them for her as soon as she has a symptom, and get a culture when possible. This way we don't have to wait.
Today, Mom hung out with me, and Miah for a bit. She's always good with our kids. They accept whatever is happening with her, and consider it a challenge to get her to laugh. Dad had an appointment for a test for another issue...he really likes issues, unfortunately. So Mom got a break from him, and he got a break from her. He's been loud with her all week ("I'm not yelling") because both are out of their routines. Well, I'm really glad Miah was with us. He held her hand everywhere we went. In BJ's, people were popping eyes, with this handsome young man holding the hand of this vacant tiny little lady, laughing at everything they saw.
Tonight, the 'rents are supposed to go out for dinner with some friends. As I write this, I'm not so sure that's going to happen. Mom is noncompliant today, I just spoke with her and told her to lay down and rest for awhile. She was nightwalking last night, doesn't really have any appetite today. Dad has totally lost his patience with her. So he's downstairs, and she's laying down on their bed with the tube on. Here's hoping she chills for an hour or two. I'll have to remind him to hold her arm as they walk to the car, and then in the parking lot of the restaurant.
Significant change...the New Year...I'll be needing the Marx attire, I think! And the patience to keep from taking over it all.
