When parents go to the party...
As some of you know, Blues on the Beach was Saturday. We had lovely weather - if you like rain and wind, soggy clothing including underwear! Our high school class continues its 2nd year of having a party on the beach during this fun event. Yes, we had an official reunion in December, but this is so much fun, we're probably going to keep on doing it every year!
Mom and Dad - well, really Dad - asked me why I was making brownies on Friday night. First Dad wanted me to go to Ninety-Nine with them for dinner Friday...hmmmm...empty house with just me, myself and I? Going to Ninety - Nine with the people I've watched television with the past 5 nights...
"No, that's OK, Dad, I had a late lunch. I have to make brownies anyway for our party."
"At the beach? Blues on the Beach? You going?"
So I explained, I was leaving in the morning, going to help with set up at one of the pavilions for our class reunion.
"Oh, it's supposed to rain all day, you know." Yes, he is known as the Voice of Doom.
"Well, that really isn't an issue, it's just rain." Monsoon like rain! Yes, the Voice is often correct.
So, on Saturday, I leave, have a great breakfast with the gang...mimosas and bourbon balls, with a chaser of delish Frenchbreadtoast! Go to the beach, Pavilion 3 (the one with the very very leaky roof!), start the party!
Around noon or so, someone yells out, "Hey, Jude! Your parents are here..."
Remember when you were a kid, and your parents asked you were you were going??? I should have said,
"Out" like back in the day.
So they came and hung out at the beach with their daughter, and her friends and classmates from those days.
Now, I wasn't the only one who had a parent or two with her. Another classmate brought her Dad, who knew my parents. Turns out they had a blast chatting together, and showing some of the younger crowd how it continues to be important to keep your friends, and stay young.
They made me realize how very lucky I am to still have them, to see that they are active, and social, to see them through others' eyes. It turns out my parents still had something to teach me about life.
